Amy Winehouse Biopic in the Works
THERE IS CURRENTLY A BIOPIC FOR AMY WINEHOUSE IN THE EARLY STAGES OF PRE-PRODUCTION.
On July 11th, 2022, news broke out that filmmaker Sam Taylor-Johnson — director of the 2015 film Fifty Shades of Grey — will direct a biopic about Amy Winehouse called Back to Black.
Amy Winehouse was a British singer-songwriter who mixed soul, R&B, and jazz into her music. Even after she died in 2011, her music continues to live on in the memory of her fanbase and new listeners. But now that the biopic will happen, her music isn't the only thing making headlines.
There are already a few ideas on who Taylor-Johnson should cast as the lead. One Twitter user @notpopbase says, “Lady Gaga could definitely play Amy Winehouse in a biopic.”
Another Twitter user @versaceschanel disagrees and says, “I repeat, Lauren Jauregui as Amy Winehouse in a biopic immediately.” In an interview with The Zach Sang Show on November 2nd, 2018, Lauren Jauregui expressed her desire to play Winehouse in a biopic. So there is a possibility that she will get to play her dream role!
However, some Winehouse fans are not happy. It seems that the upcoming biopic is meant to profit off of her name and legacy. The managing editor of InsideHook, Bonnie Stiernberg, went on Twitter to say, “I’m an enormous Amy Winehouse fan, but there’s absolutely no reason (other than [money]) for this to be made when the ‘Amy’ doc already exists and is a million times better than any estate-sanctioned biopic could ever be.”
The culture industry plays a role in marketing biopics about late celebrities such as Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis and Andrew Dominik’s biopic about Marilyn Monroe, Blonde. Especially given the fact that biopics are manifesting into a movie genre of their own. As a result of successful marketing, producers of these biopics can make money from it. So it is understandable why some people are hesitant to see another biopic about a pop culture icon with ingenuine intentions behind it.
If more people get on board during the production process, hopefully, it will be to commemorate Winehouse.
