Miles Teller and the men of this year’s Top Gun: Maverick

With mustaches and men in uniform, these are the actors behind the viral TikTok Top Gun movie trends.

Drooling over U.S. military men in uniform has definitely reached a new peak with the release of this year’s Top Gun: Maverick movie. Tom Cruise is right back where we left him in aviation action since the 1986 release of the original Top Gun, although this time he’s taking flight with some new and noteworthy Hollywood actors. Some of which, are responsible for every woman’s husband shaving their facial hair into a very prolific mustache.

The film features Tom Cruise’s character Pete “Maverick” Mitchell and his somewhat-triumphant return to the U.S. Navy’s Fighters Weapons School, only this time, he’s teaching prospective special mission lieutenants. With a high-risk mission looming, Maverick must ready the pilots in training before selecting six of them, one as their team leader, to complete the dangerous mission. Tensions are high between rival lieutenants, training is ruthless with Maverick in the air, and Maverick’s history is catching up with him through an old flame played by Jennifer Connelly, and the son of Maverick’s late best friend and co-pilot played by Miles Teller.

As much as Tom Cruise is the star of the show in this film, Miles Teller has been turning heads all over social media for his performance. Teller’s character Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw appears nothing but jaded during the majority of the film. His extreme hatred for Maverick and his past is part of what drives the movie in a unique way so that the audience can watch the history and patching of their relationship unfold all the way to the end. All the while, he’s dealing with the self-righteous, arrogant Jake “Hangman” Seresin, played by Glenn Powell; a rival lieutenant competing for a top spot in the mission with a profound love for getting under Rooster’s skin.

But if it isn’t the heartwarming character development, action-packed plot, or overly-corny macho dialogue you care about, Teller’s mustache, the infamous beach scene, as well as the no shortage of good looks in the cast are all noteworthy subjects to discuss. Shortly after the film’s U.S. release, if you opened TikTok you’d be bombarded with men transitioning from the “lumberjack look” with a full beard to the short and sweet Miles Teller mustache; made especially famous thanks to the film.

“Danger Zone” by Kenny Loggins, a song from the original Top Gun film, has also found its way back to popularity by becoming one of TikTok’s Top 10 viral songs through its use in the mustache transformation videos. But it doesn’t quite top the number three most viral TikTok Top Gun: Maverick song, “Take My Breath Away” by Berlin, also reused in this year’s film. However, this song has a bit more of a viral trend behind it, once again involving Teller. Videos of the iconic beach scene from the movie where the characters partake in a game of football have flooded the internet yet the focus is mostly on Teller’s muscular display and iconic dance move that has left viewers starstruck. If you didn’t already know Teller from his movies such as War Dogs and Whiplash, then you will not be disappointed by his role in Top Gun: Maverick.

Alongside Teller, the rest of the cast has definitely led viewers to keep an eye open for good-looking military personnel. Powell, who plays “Hangman” in the film, has also shared the spotlight in films such as Set It Up, Hidden Figures, and Ride Along. Jay Ellis, who plays the character “Payback”, has starred in the TV show “Insecure” and the 2019 thriller Escape Room and works together with his co-pilot, played by actor Danny Ramirez, “Fanboy.” Last but not least, the seemingly-awkward outcast of the group, Bob, played by Lewis Pullman works together with Monica Barbaro’s character “Phoenix” as her co-pilot and the only female in the group of pilots.

After watching the film, it’s clear that Top Gun: Maverick is a feel-good revamp of an old classic that is sure to be the favorite of many action-lovers, and Miles Teller and his mustache are here to stay.
