The “Red Flag” emoji has taken over the feeds of Gen Z causing an entire community of individuals to share their gripes with everyday life.

Everything has become a red flag from men who lack headboards to women who claim they’ll be ready in five minutes. The red flag has become an immediate response to anything mildly suspicious and Gen Z is loving it. The red flag trend is being taken to the next level—being applied to anything and everything.

Without a doubt the red flag trend is nothing but humorous with a splash of dark humor as every subliminal suggestion has a subtle truth. Whether you’re the guy who still holds an Android or the gal who claims she can’t have any girlfriends cause they’re “too much drama” we all know that these are not deal breakers but,...red flags, am I right?!?! 🚩🚩🚩

Amongst our consistent scrolling and desire for information, the red flag trend has filled the screens of Gen Z and they are enjoying every moment of it. A single emoji has uncovered a dialogue that everyone can seem to chime in on, but with that being said, it low high key speaks volumes to a lack of desire for commitment within an entire generation. Maybe the red flag isn’t the particular individual it applies to— but more so the individual’s prospect to commitment.

“You wanting to be with someone who’s not ready for a relationship is a red flag.”
-@MadWomanInExile

Gen Z dismisses the concept of long lasting partnership and rebukes the conventional notions of love. They choose to revel in hook-up culture and the fleeting nature of flings—the possibility of disrupting this lifestyle is not only registered  dangerous—but a red flag.

So with commitment being the issue, it looks like the Gen Z generation coined terms to describe the state of being somewhere in between single and taken to a situationship and sneaky link. If you need a refresher our girl Snoh Aalegra can help you with that. These phrases usher society into a new era of dating—a time of rules and a preference for the casual love affair. Samantha Brenna , featured writer in Refine’s blog, explores the non-committal dating scene through her article Always a...Never a Girlfriend uncovering that “the number one rule never broken: No falling in love.”

Romance is dead and Gen Z does not want it back. The compulsive monogamy and the self sacrificing nature of committed relationships are a thing of the past. Relationships are a red flag for Gen Z infringing on the spontaneous individualism that marks their generation. Gen Z will continue to label anything as a red flag in order to avoid relationships. Men who eat lunchables are red flags–and somehow beekeepers have made it on the list too. Try and force Gen Z into a relationship and you too will also find characteristics of yourself being roasted on the net, but at the end of the day the Gen Z generation encourages everyone to laugh in the face of being single and enjoy the casualness of it all.
