What’s Wrong With Being Super Sexually Fluid?

We’ve all been in a bit of a kiss scandal; liplocking with someone regardless of the attention it would attract—

but author Tom Taylors finds himself in the spotlight of kiss-drama after announcing the new DC superman will be bisexual. The revelation of the new Superman’s sexuality left the world shocked—but why? How can we expect a hunky super babe to limit his option—of course he would bat for both teams. Saving the world kind of grants a free pass to kiss anyone.

DC takes a step to provide an inclusive and representative environment for their fans. Tom Taylor explores the universal need for a hero and the importance of seeing the heroes we adore within ourselves by stating,

I've always said everyone needs heroes and everyone deserves to see themselves in their heroes and I’m very grateful DC and Warner Bros. share this idea.Superman's symbol has always stood for hope, for truth and for justice. Today, that symbol represents something more. Today, more people can see themselves in the most powerful superhero in comics.

Superman has acquired a whole new set of powers—the ability to make all of his fans feel cared for and protected. With any movement that pushes for progress there is always backlash, and in the case of DC’s new Superman this notion proves to be true.  Most notable hater, Dean Cain, who also starred in "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman”, protests against the progressive move DC has made by tweeting “Anyone who tweets or supports this narrative is straight bonkers.” He openly shares his lack of support by stating ,"I don't think it's bold or brave or some crazy new direction.”

DC’s decision, despite the attention it has acquired from adversaries, is a step in the right direction. The son of Superman encourages fans to kiss who they please—and to do so proudly. Fan’s show their support by calling out the blatant homophobia against their favorite hero. Instagram user @mattxiv poses in front of a wall that reads, “Imagine how fragile your masculinity is if a fictional character coming out as LGBTQ feels threatening to you.”

The American hero who has captured the hearts of many takes on a brand new look shifting American values as a whole. Superman is super sexually fluid—and nothing is wrong with that. DC comics creates a safe space for their fans allowing for a deeper sense of enjoyment. A single kiss has changed comics suggesting that others will hopefully follow suit. We all need someone who we see ourselves in—someone who makes us feel like we have the power to be a hero and DC has fulfilled this human need by allowing their fans to feel powerful regardless of the attention it garners.  The need for more representation will continue to grow and DC excited us with the endless possibilities of superheroes we can see in ourselves.
