Nepo Babies: nothing new
Pop-culture has recently become obsessed with a tradition that has long been practiced. Audience can’t deny that the pages of luxury magazines, runways, or the gilded screens around the world have been dominated by a certain crowd. Countless beloved celebrities have been themselves, Nepotism babies. Why and how has this become an current obsession that has been taken on by storm with the Gen Z crowd?
Nepo babies have indeed been around since the beginning of Hollywood. The first time we see this being carried out is by French Filmmakers, The Lumiere Brothers, for the film “Feeding The Baby” in 1895. Favorite on-screen actors such as Kate Hudson, Zoe Kravitz, and Jake Gyllenhaal are also nepotism babies, so why are we upset as of recent?
One reason you might say, is that perhaps it crushes the American Dream. The notion that if you work hard, that you can accomplish and exceed your dreams. But with the recent rise of a more saturated industry consisting of nepo babies; already privileged individuals have proven that the American Dream isn’t always true. Especially if the audience feels that the performance, whether it ranges from acting to modeling, can be mediocre.
To their credit they’re stars who humbly admit to their incredible start in life. Daughter of rock legend Lenny Kravitz and actress Lisa Bonnet, Zoe Kravitz, isn’t shy about the topic. “It’s completely normal for people to be in the family business.” Kate Hudson, daughter of Goldie Hawn and Bill Hudson, also shares her thoughts on the matter. “The nepotism thing, I mean… I don’t really care.” She continues, “I look at my kids and we’re a storytelling family. It’s definitely in our blood. People can call it whatever they want, but it’s not going to change it.”
